Fluorosis occurs when a patient has consumed too much fluoride while the teeth are forming. Typically, fluorosis occurs when young children take fluoride supplements or swallow fluoridated toothpaste when their water supply already has fluoride in it. Results of fluorosis include white or brown discoloration or spots on the surface of the tooth. This condition is purely cosmetic and is not a disease of the mouth.
At Orland Oaks Dental, our dentists and team understand how frustrating it can be to have cosmetic imperfections in the smile due to fluorosis. Drs. Brian Walczak and Sage VanAntwerp can treat your fluorosis with our white spot removal program. By utilizing a variety of cosmetic procedures, we can safely refresh your smile, giving you a picture-perfect look.
We offer fluorosis treatments in Orland Park, Illinois, at our state-of-the-art dental practice. When you schedule your dental appointment, our team will analyze your current needs and can present you with treatment options that are custom-suited for you.
As a parent, you can help your young children to prevent developing fluorosis, which is a permanent condition. For children under the age of six, we recommend that you have the child use non-fluoridated dental products, like fluoridated toothpastes and mouthwashes. Children should only take fluoride supplements in their water if your drinking water doesn’t have high enough fluoride levels. Before starting your child on any fluoride supplements, discuss your fluoride levels and concerns with a dentist or pediatrician.
